Google, one of the leading names in the global tech world, has said it plans to trim 10% of its managerial jobs across the company. The latest exercise is in addition to the elimination of directors and vice-presidents, as well as other executive levels. The exercise has been an effort by companies in an effort to optimize its operational efficiencies through restructuring exercises. This sort of restructuring has been going on for two years, says Sundar Pichai. While most affected managers will end up in individual contributor roles, many positions are permanently going away. Google reported its job cuts after over 12,000 workers were let go in the last year of 2023.
The overall tech industry is seeing a wave of layoffs. Over the past six months, as many as 333 companies together have cut more than 98,000 workers. For example, in May 2024, 39 companies together accounted for 10,000 job cuts. This underlines troubles in the sector, from rising competition and market pressures to increasing attention to AI-driven efficiencies.
