Development Of Omkareshwara Temple On The Musi River

Government Plan for a New Temple

The state government plans to develop the Musi River basin as a symbol of religious harmony. The construction of a grand Shiva temple will serve as the initial step of this project.

The new Omkareshwara Temple will be built near two historic temples:

  • Veerabhadraswamy Temple
  • Machileshwara Temple

The two temples exist in Manchirevula village which belongs to Gandipet Mandal. The Veerabhadraswamy Temple is about 800 years old, while the Machileshwara temple is about 1,400 years old.

The temple design follows guidance from the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will lay the foundation stone on the 28th of this month at 8:30 AM. The ceremony will occur at the Veerabhadraswamy Temple premises which will include representatives from the Sringeri Peetham.

Musi River Development Initiative

The Musi River flows through the city for about 55 kilometers. The river starts at the twin reservoirs and flows eastward until it reaches Pratapsingaram.

The government plans to develop this stretch with places of worship for four religions. The project aims to establish peaceful relations between different religious groups. The proposal includes:

  • Renovation of Veerabhadraswamy Temple
  • Construction of a mosque at Purana Pul
  • Construction of a gurudwara at Gowliguda
  • Construction of a church at Nagole

The development will start from the twin reservoirs and extend to Bapu Ghat. The Omkareshwara Temple project will mark the beginning of this phase.

Historical Importance of the Temple Site

  • The temple administrator Parameshwar states that the Veerabhadraswamy Temple dates back to the Kakatiya period. The Machileshwara Shivalinga was installed during the Chalukya period.
  • The government intends to protect these historic buildings through its preservation efforts. The Omkareshwara Temple project will begin with renovation work on an 8-acre site that will be developed for construction purposes.

Temple Design and Structure

The temple complex will include several traditional architectural elements:

The complex will feature a Gali Gopuram which serves as the main entrance tower and multiple mandapams which function as halls and a central Garbhalayam which serves as the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The dimensions of the sanctum tower will be:

  • Length: 14 feet
  • Width: 14 feet
  • Height: 64 feet

This sanctum is expected to be one of the largest, following the design scale of Yadagirigutta Temple.

Project Cost and Funding Plan

The project will require a total budget of ₹700 crores. The government stated that this temple construction is part of the initial phase of Musi River development.

The funding sources will include:

  • Donor contributions
  • Private organizations will join the funding process
  • Infrastructure and Tourism Development

The project will develop new infrastructure and enhance visitor facilities throughout its implementation.

Key developments planned:

  • The project will create wide access roads from the Outer Ring Road Hyderabad
  • The project will provide parking space which can accommodate between 1,000 to 2,000 vehicles
  • The project will build a small check dam which will span the river
  • The project will install a 100-foot statue of Lord Shiva which will be located on a river islet
