Shubman Gill On Leading Indias ODI Team Nothing From The Outside Will Affect Us

New Era of Leadership in Indian Cricket

A new era has unfolded in India's ODI cricket history. The new captain, Shubman Gill, is set to face his first series as captain. India has veteran players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Sunday will see the first ODI against Australia in Perth.

Speaking at a pre-match media conference, Gill answered team dynamics and leadership questions. He also stated that external feedback would not dissuade the decision-making of the team or its cohesion. He stated that the internal process of the team would not change, calling this period a "transitional phase" for Indian cricket.

Learning from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Gill acknowledged the importance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s experience. He said that no one in the current setup matches their level of exposure to high-pressure situations. Gill mentioned that he regularly discusses match conditions, pitch behavior, and decision-making with both seniors.

He said he receives different opinions from colleagues but makes the decision by himself, depending on his own wisdom. Rohit and Virat, says Gill, are also tolerant and never feel annoyed when he asks them for advice. He also added that their advice has helped him to grow as a captain and a batsman.

He also thanked him for being able to play for players whom he admired as a boy. He said that their never-ending passion for cricket encourages him daily. Having to lead such senior players, he stated, is an honor and learning experience.

Carrying the Legacy of Great Captains

Gill discussed the responsibility of leading the Indian ODI team. He clarified that his goal is to continue the legacy established by MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

Both Virat and Rohit, according to Gill, have built a very strong culture in the team, and he would like to keep that same level. He said he has already spoken to them regarding how they could take Indian cricket forward. Their experience, Gill also said, will still be valuable when the team begins this new era.
