Project Launch and National Significance
- The foundation ceremony of the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel plant marks a major step in the development of Andhra Pradesh. The project aims to expand India’s steel production capacity and strengthen industrial growth.
- Narendra Modi stated that this plant will support economic progress and create job opportunities for local youth. The project will establish the state as a central hub for industrial development according to his statement.
Vision for North Andhra Development
- N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the steel plant will begin a new phase in the history of North Andhra. He spoke at the event held in Rajayyapeta which is part of Nakkapalli Mandal in Anakapalli district.
- The new plant will function as an extension of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant according to his explanation. The combination of these industries will enhance the state's strength in the steel industry.
He explained that the project will drive growth in five different sectors which include:
- Transport and logistics
- Hospitality and tourism
- Real estate development
- Education and training
- Healthcare services
He thanked local farmers for providing land support and requested residents to continue their partnership with him.
Project Scale and Development Plan
The steel plant will be built across 5,465 acres. The project will create 100000 job opportunities through its direct and indirect employment activities.
- Two-Phase Construction Plan
- Phase 1: Production capacity of 7.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA)
- Phase 2: Expansion to 10.5 MTPA
The timeline includes:
- First blast furnace: operational by June 2030
- Second blast furnace: operational by December 2030
A captive port will also be developed:
- Capacity: 50 MTPA
- Area: 316 acres
- Investment: ₹11,192 crore
- Jobs: around 6,000 positions
A four-lane road will connect the plant to the national highway network.
Local Participation and Employment Focus
The state completed land acquisition within 18 months and secured required approvals.
The government established an employment system that gives job preference to:
- Nakkapalli residents
- Payakaraopeta residents
- Anakapalli district residents
- Andhra Pradesh residents
- All other people
Training programs will prepare local youth for jobs in the steel sector. The organization has reached agreements with state officials to establish:
- skill development programs
- a steel industry training Center of Excellence
Young people are encouraged to start small industries linked to the steel ecosystem.
Strategic Importance of the Plant
ArcelorMittal stands as a top steel producer among all steel companies worldwide. The new facility is expected to increase the industrial strength of Nakkapalli and surrounding regions.
The project aligns with national initiatives such as:
- Make in India
- Atmanirbhar Bharat
The plant will receive iron ore through a dedicated pipeline system that delivers ore directly to the facility.
Investment Growth and Future Plans
The state government reported investments worth ₹20.35 lakh crore over the past 20 months. The target is to generate 2.2 million jobs within three years.
The main development projects consist of:
- The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited facility located in Nellore
- The Quantum Valley project situated in Amaravati
The industries that operate in aerospace and defense and drones and automobiles across Rayalaseema area
The state is also focusing on green energy, aiming to set national benchmarks.
Infrastructure and Regional Expansion
The government plans to supply water from the Polavaram Project to Anakapalli.
Visakhapatnam will be developed as a major urban and industrial hub. The project will concentrate on developing these sectors:
- The tourism and hospitality sector
- The data center and IT services sector
- The steel and manufacturing sector
- The logistics and connectivity sector
The following infrastructure projects will be developed:
- Development of Mulapeta Port in Srikakulam
- Proposal for a cargo airport in Palasa
- Near completion of Bhogapuram International Airport (expected launch in July)
