Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that Andhra Pradesh (AP) contributes 10 percent to the country’s agriculture sector. His remarks came during a meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister discussed measures taken by the state government to strengthen agriculture and allied sectors. He requested the release of funds to expand the AP Community Managed Natural Farming program under the PM-PRANAM scheme. He requested Rs. 216 crore to provide financial help for his plan to decrease chemical fertilizer usage through his required incentive program.
Natural and Organic Farming requires special attention
The Chief Minister informed the Union Minister that chemical use in cultivation declined by 2.28 percent in 2024–25. The state promotes organic farming according to him. Approximately 18 lakh farmers will adopt organic practices across 8 lakh hectares according to him.
He requested Rs. 200 crore in assistance to strengthen coconut cultivation in the state. He suggested building a coconut processing park and modern tender coconut markets which would mirror the existing facilities in Karnataka. He requested assistance with creating coconut nurseries while training farmers in advanced agricultural techniques.
Support for Makhana and Allied Sectors
The Chief Minister requested the establishment of a Makhana Development Board in Andhra Pradesh. He sought incentives to promote makhana cultivation in 50,000 acres around the Kolleru Lake area.
In response, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Andhra Pradesh is developing into a horticulture hub. He noted that cashew, coffee, cocoa, and coconut are cultivated widely in the state. He assured that farmers will receive support prices for their produce.
He stated that Andhra Pradesh plays an important role in achieving the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He assured full support from the central government for the state’s agricultural growth. He said a special team has been appointed to assist the state. He confirmed that the Centre will extend support through central schemes and modern technology.
He also mentioned continued support for fisheries and animal husbandry development. He acknowledged the state’s progress in organic farming and palm oil production and assured assistance for further expansion of organic cultivation.
