Formation of Cyclone Likely over Bay of Bengal

The possible threat of a cyclone is looming over the state. According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area may develop in southeast Bay of Bengal on Saturday. It will move west-northwest and develop into a depression within the next 48 hours. Experts said it may further intensify into a cyclone in southwest Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure system is already active in the southwest Bay of Bengal. Due to that, there may be light to moderate rainfall on Thursday in Prakasam, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts. The rainfall may occur in Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts on Friday, the Disaster Management Agency said. Many parts of the state may receive light to moderate rains from Friday to Sunday and heavy rain in isolated areas on Tuesday, according to the Amaravati Meteorological Center.

Cold conditions continue across the state. Residents in agency areas are experiencing very low temperatures. G. Madugula in Alluri Sitarama Raju district recorded 4.6°C on Tuesday night, the lowest this season.

Other recorded minimum temperatures:

  • Munchangiputtu: 5.8°C
  • Chintapalli: 6.8°C
  • Dumbriguda: 7.8° C
  • Paderu and Pedabayalu: 8.1ºC

These included reports of less than 15°C temperature in Parvathipuram Manyam, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and NTR districts.

Minimum temperatures are at about 5°C below normal over Telangana and Chhattisgarh. The IMD has warned of cold winds impacting Telangana on Thursday.
