The Kerala Assembly passed a resolution in 2023 which requested an official name change. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan explained that the state name in Malayalam exists as Keralam. He noted that in other languages, it is referred to as Kerala.
The BJP has expressed support for the proposal. The state president of the party Rajiv Chandrasekhar sent a letter to the Chief Minister regarding the matter. The Chief Minister confirmed that Keralam represents the original name of the state. He explained that the British changed it to Kerala for convenience. According to him the government is changing the name to show the state's cultural heritage.
The Union Cabinet approval of the proposal will begin the constitutional process. The Constitution's Article 3 allows official name changes for the state. All languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution will require updates to the new name.
