Today marks Constitution Day in India. Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote an open letter to the people. In the letter, he reminded the citizens to fulfill their constitutional duties. He said the duties form the foundation of a strong democracy.
Modi said that the Constitution confers the right to vote on every citizen. It is the responsibility of every citizen, he added, to vote in all kinds of elections to the government. Schools and colleges should celebrate Constitution Day every year on November 26, he asked. Such a celebration, he added, would inspire all citizens, particularly first-time voters.
He called upon the youth to adhere to the democratic values. Modi said such values lay the foundation for a strong nation. He pointed out that India is soon going to complete 100 years of freedom and, in 2049, it is going to be 100 years since the adoption of the Constitution. He emphasized that decisions and actions taken today have a bearing on the future of the generations to come.
Modi reflected on his experiences in Parliament. He remembered coming into Parliament for the first time in 2014 and venerating the Constitution. In 2019, after election results, he placed the Constitution before him as a mark of respect. He said the Constitution gives citizens the power to dream and the chance to achieve those dreams.
He said the duty of all citizens is to fulfill their responsibilities, and in that lies the contribution to build a developed and empowered India. On this occasion, Modi also paid tribute to the makers of the Constitution.
