Two LowPressure Areas Forming In The Bay Of Bengal

Current Status

Weather forecasters are monitoring unusual activity in the Bay of Bengal. One low-pressure area is already active, and another one is expected to form soon. Presently, the two systems are in interaction with each other, although there is a possibility that they may combine in the next few days.

A severe low-pressure area lies over the Strait of Malacca. According to the India Meteorological Department, IMD, it would move west-northwest, become a depression by Tuesday, and a cyclone by Thursday. Meanwhile, experts say there are favorable environmental conditions for a cyclone to emerge. Its course and landfall remain not entirely certain. Most November cyclones over the Bay of Bengal have moved towards West Bengal and Bangladesh, though a few have reached the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Normally, the course becomes clearer once a low-pressure area forms, but as of now, there is no clarity on which direction this system will take.

Heavy Rain in Forecast after November 29

Surface circulation continues near the Comorin region. According to the IMD forecast, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to Comorin and Sri Lanka, on Tuesday. The system is likely to intensify gradually.

Heavy rainfall is likely to hit Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall will be intense in Rayalaseema and southern coastal districts on November 29. On November 30, very heavy rain is likely over Bapatla, Prakasam, Sri Potti Sri Ramulu, Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Annamaya, Tirupati, and Chittoor districts.

Fishermen have been warned to keep off the seas on Thursday and Friday as the seas will be rough. Those who are already out in the sea have been advised to return to the shore before Thursday.

Future Developments

Weather models show the deep depression over the Strait of Malacca will become a depression and further weaken around November 30. A low-pressure system that is likely to form over the Comorin area is forecast to strengthen and reach the coast between Tamil Nadu and the southern coast by December 1.
