The song Vande Mataram, which motivated millions of Indians during the freedom movement, turns 150 on Friday. The Central Government has chalked out year-long programs to mark the occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally kick off the anniversary celebrations at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
A stamp and coin will be released later as part of the celebration. This was confirmed through a statement provided by the Prime Minister’s Office. Vande Mataram will be sung at 9:50 a.m. across public places throughout Friday morning. The national singing has been expected to be joined by citizens hailing from different communities and walks of life.
Vande Mataram was created by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on November 7, 1875. The song first appeared in his novel “Anand Math”. With time, it came to symbolize unity and patriotism during India’s struggle for independence.
In the state, Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao issued orders on Thursday instructing that Vande Mataram be sung in all official and educational institutions on Friday morning. The directive encompasses government offices, schools, colleges, local bodies, and all recognized or affiliated institutions.
District collectors have been asked to ensure proper arrangements are made for the collective singing across all regions.
