Congress Continues Strong Performance In Gram Panchayat Elections

Results of the Second Phase

In the second phase of Gram Panchayat Sarpanch and ward member elections, Congress-backed candidates have maintained their good show. They have won over half of the total 4,333 seats, which reiterates their dominance in the state. In all the other districts, except Kumuram Bheem, Jangaon, and Nirmal, a majority of Congress-backed candidates have won.

Candidates of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) stood at the second position. Independent candidates were at the third spot. Candidates in support of BJP have won a majority in only Nirmal district

Total Seat Distribution

12:30 AM, taking into consideration the unanimous victories, the split in seats stood at:  

  • Congress: 2,297 seats (51.9%)  
  • Bharat Rashtra Samithi: 1,191 seats (27.5%)  
  • BJP: 257 seats (6

Of these ‘others’, CPM-supported candidates won 33 seats and CPI-supported candidates won 28 seats.

In the first phase, a total of 2,425 seats were won by Congress-supported candidates, 1,168 by BRS, 189 by BJP, and 448 by others.

High Voter Participation

Although it was a cold day, people have not deterred from voting in large numbers. Voters started lining up from early morning. The voting percentage touched 85.86 percent. This is 1.58 percent higher than the last phase conducted on January 11, which recorded a voting percentage of 84.28 percent.

Scope of Elections and Unanimous Victories

The elections notification included: *   4,333 village panchayat sarpanch posts *   38,350 ward member posts Of these:

  • 415 sarpanch posts were decided unanimously
  • 8,307 member postings in wards were decided unanimously

No nominations were filed in:

  • One village in Mancherial & Warangal District
  • "Three villages in Nalgonda district"
  • 108 Wards
  • Elections were put on hold in two villages and 18 wards.

Polling and Contest Information

Conducted in 193 mandals for: 

  •  3,911 Sarpanch Posts 
  •  29,917 Ward Member Posts

A total of

  • 12,782 candidates vied for sarpanch
  • A total of 71,071 contestants ran for ward member seats

Yadadri Bhuvanagiri saw the highest polling percentage with 91.72 percent. The lowest percentage of polling is in Nizamabad with 76.71 percent. More than 80 percent polling was recorded in 29 constituencies.

Of the total 54,40,339 voters, 46,70,972 voters have exercised their right to vote. A higher percentage of women voters have participated in voting. 

  • Female voters:23,93,010 out of 27,82,494
  •  Male voters:22,77,902

Voting remains peaceful in the state, with only a few minor incidents being reported. Elected representatives, MPs, MLAs, and MLCs took part in voting. Voting is being closely watched by authorities via webcasting.

The poll ended at 1 PM, and the counting of votes started at 2 PM. In most elections, the competition was very tight. A number of contestants won elections by a margin of one or two votes.

Deputy Sarpanch Elections

After declaration of results, elections of Deputy Sarpanches were conducted. Members of each ward gathered to elect a Deputy Sarpanch for their respective villages.

BJP-supported candidates won a majority in the Nirmal district and emerged runner-up to Congress in the Adilabad district.
