Ministers Plan Guidelines To Keep Children Away From Social Media

Minister Nara Lokesh instructed officials to create rules which will limit social media usage by underage users. The cabinet sub-committee conducted its meeting at the Secretariat on Wednesday to create better methods for monitoring social media platforms. Minister Lokesh led the meeting which included Information and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy Home Minister Anita Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav and additional officials.

International Practices Study

  • Minister Lokesh stated that Singapore Australia Malaysia and France policies should be examined by his team. The Supreme Court guidelines will serve as the basis for creating the new guidelines. Minister Manohar explained that Malaysian regulations permit social media access only to users who reach 16 years of age. E-KYC systems use My Digital ID together with passport data to manage access permissions.
  • The ministers reached a consensus that social media usage should be restricted for minors. The officials received their assignment to research international regulations which establish minimum age requirements. Authorities will implement strict penalties against individuals who incite hatred through their caste or religious or regional discrimination.

Measures Against Misuse

  • Minister Lokesh highlighted the need to manage repeat offenders who distribute false information and abusive content through social media platforms. He proposed that compliance officers from Google Meta and X should be invited to participate in the upcoming meeting.
  • The state government designated an adjudicating officer through Section 46 of the IT Act for state-level appointments. The officer has authority to take punitive measures against individuals who post hateful content online. According to officials certain cases are currently being processed through the Sahyog portal which belongs to the central government.
