The feat would see Shreyas Iyer taking down the former Indian cricketing stars Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli along with him. Shikhar Dhawan spent 72 innings in total to reach 3,000 ODI runs whereas Virat Kohli required just 75 innings to get to that mark. If the milestone comes in 69 innings, Shreyas Iyer will be a step ahead of both.
The upcoming match will not only see the Indian batsman touch the mark of 3,000 runs but will also position him as the fourth fastest in the world to achieve this. He will thus place himself at par with Viv Richards. Hashim Amla is the master record-holder who got 3,000 ODI runs in mere 57 innings.
Shreyas Iyer, who had been suffering from an injury, just got back to the Indian squad. He managed to put on 49 runs from 47 balls during the first ODI against New Zealand. His knock was decorated with 4 fours and a six. Besides, he and Virat Kohli scored 77 runs together for the third wicket, which came off 76 balls.
